The way magento appears has products variants as socalled [complex product] is a bit more easier realised in opencart and xcart.
Admin has to create as much magento 'simple' products as many variants needed per complex product - so called 'Super product attributes configuration'
It is not surprising after all that magento site need indexing after all as the number of products can increase drammatically if setting lots of complex products rather then having 1 product with 1 system product ID with a few options like in opencart for example.

If admins can't find magento new products coming up in catalogue or search results (no-search-results-magento-products.png) they need to do indexing.
