xcart4 is a functional API just like it's parent project oscommerce. The most difference of early x-cart releases from oscommerce is that the templates in oscommerce are not based on any templator but x-cart later versions like x-cart 4 classic use Smarty templator.

xcart5 (aka x-cart 5) is based on symfony2 framework just like drupal. The templates are using another template engine in comarison to xcart4 (x-cart 4 classic), called Flexy -> Update: at the moment it's Twig templates

xcart5 used to be as fresh released as still have Drupal's code

One of the very frustrating feature of xcart4 is that when xcart admin enables the checkout with paypal right from cart details page (x-cart 4 view cart page) the total sum does not include the shipping or payment fees. Imagine store owners shipping the items without paid shipping fees? Here is what those admins say: you never guess what?    in abc store it is added on view also, and the same, no shipping cost, i been losing money :-((((
